Another Profitable Summer

Back to Fort Worth
When the semester ended, I headed back to Fort Worth to find summer employment. My sister Dee helped me to find a job at the Credit Bureau where she was also employed. My job was to run the mimeograph machine. I learned that I had replaced a very efficient female who had moved onward and upward. She was very efficient I was told (message to me--you are really slow.) Since I had spent two summers with Dee and Austin, arrangements were made for me to stay with my aunt Evelyn (mother's sister) and her talented son Richard Powell. He was about 5 or 6 years old and was taking piano lessons. His father (divorced from his mother) was a fan of professional wrestling, and Richard had developed an affection for the sport as well. Sometimes he would want to practice several holds on me, the stomach crawl was one of his favorites.
I slept on a mat on the floor of the living room, which worked for me. My aunt loaned me a wind-up clock which I placed near my head so I could hear the alarm. The clock had a very good alarm which would start with one "ding" and then another and another until there were constant dings. I was able to hear the first ding and turn it off. Then I got up and dressed for work. There was a bus stop near their apartment that had a convenient stop downtown just in front of the Credit Bureau. The trip back brought me to the other side of the street where I had boarded the bus that morning. Often Dee and I boarded the same bus. But let me tell you waiting for the bus on a hot summer evening was not my favorite activity. However Aunt Evelyn's apartment had air conditioning so I could cool off when I got there. I continued my attendance at Connell Baptist Church until it was time to return home to prepare for my Junior year at La Tech.
